In financial matters, a rating is the systematic, qualitative assessment of the creditworthiness of companies, countries or financial instruments. The assessment is usually carried out by rating agents or banks and is classified into different rating levels. Well-known rating agencies include Standard & Poor’s (S&P), Moody’s and Fitch.
