What are shopping apps?
More and more retailers and wholesalers are relying on shopping apps. In contrast to a website, an app is characterised by a more intuitive user interface and offers the provider numerous opportunities to interact with users. In addition, apps store a lot of user data, such as customer data, locally, provide information about current offers, present the latest online brochures, and often offer exclusive discounts or promotions. In addition, some shopping apps include a Scan & Go function that significantly speeds up the payment process. And: with many apps, users can deactivate the printout of the paper receipt and instead receive their receipt digitally in the app, saving paper.
What functions do the METRO and METRO Companion apps offer?
In a total of 15 countries, METRO customers can improve their shopping experience with an app. While the app is known to customers in Germany as the METRO app, in other countries it is known as the METRO Companion app. Most of the functions of both apps are identical, but individual functions may vary in different markets. All customer data is stored in both applications, so that customers always have their digital customer card at hand – provided they always carry their smartphone with them. If customers own more than one company, they can also store several customer cards in the app and switch between their business accounts with each purchase.
In addition, users of the METRO app benefit from digital invoices, which are stored in the app instead of a paper invoice. Customers can also use the METRO app to unsubscribe from paper invoices. This feature is only available in the METRO Companion app in the Netherlands, Italy and Hungary. In addition, customers in many countries can receive an email notification when a new invoice is available, except in Spain, France, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Poland and Pakistan. Another advantage of the METRO app and the METRO Companion app is that they provide users with information about current offers, brochures and events – all in one place. Personalised discount coupons are also available to customers in the METRO app and in selected stores in the METRO Companion app.
In addition, the apps include an integrated product search that contains all product information, such as prices and availability. The product catalogue is not only available as a PDF, but is also designed to be interactive. Users can scroll through the range and click on individual products to view all the information, such as prices and availability. And if the customer doesn't have time to shop themselves, they can use the app to manage digital shopping proxies. The proxies can then take on the trip to the wholesale store. Another advantage of the METRO app and the METRO Companion app is that they support the FSD ordering process. Delivery customers can complete, view and track their orders directly in the app. In some markets, customers can use push notifications to find out the status of their order and a possible time window for delivery. This function is not yet available in Moldova, Serbia, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. In almost all countries, there is an additional app widget that displays the order and delivery status. The only exceptions are France and Italy.
For which operating systems are the METRO app and the METRO Companion app available?
The apps are available for both iOS and Android. If customers want to download and install the app, they can find it under the name ‘METRO Companion’ in their respective app store. The app works optimally on smartphones with a screen size of 4 to 5.8 inches running Android 6 or later and iOS 10 or later. METRO develops the apps in two versions, which is why the functions and services between iOS and Android may differ slightly, both temporarily and in different markets. For example, updates to both apps are initially released for iOS and usually adopted for Android after a few weeks.
