RCS chat for customer communication
More and more companies are using Rich Communication Services (RCS) to share information quickly and directly. But what is RCS? RCS is simply an extension of the classic SMS with numerous functions. Unlike traditional SMS, it allows users to send images, videos and files, hold group chats and see read receipts. To use RCS, all you need to do is enter your mobile number and agree to the communication. RCS messages are then sent via the standard smartphone messaging app, so there is no need to install any additional apps.
RCS messages are transmitted in encrypted form via the mobile network providers' infrastructure. Google Messages already supports end-to-end encryption for RCS messages between users who use Google Messages. Full encryption ensures that third parties cannot access messages while they are being sent between devices.
METRO is switching from WhatsApp to RCS
METRO will be using RCS in Germany from February 2025, replacing the previous WhatsApp channel. With the new RCS format METRO Chat, METRO will reach a larger target group and will be able to distribute more personalised content. For most WhatsApp subscribers, the change will be automated. However, some will have to re-register, for example if subscribers have stored multiple numbers or the Messenger authorisation is missing. New subscribers can easily register using a QR code or a link. Note: METRO Chat can only be used by people with a German mobile phone number.
Current offers and promotions in METRO Chat
METRO Chat regularly informs customers about current offers, top prices and promotions. Users receive the latest brochures and deals directly on their smartphone. Customers who cannot or do not want to receive RCS messages have the alternative of keeping up to date with the latest offers via the METRO newsletter or the METRO app.
